A lower windshield angle gives the Legacy a more coupelike profile, and a larger, slatted grille up front adds visual distinction. Nevertheless, the sleek 4-door-coupe profile and clean, straightforward lines are promising for the future of the Legacy.

A strong, defining character line runs down the side of the car, accenting the low, muscular stance over flared fenders. Head-on, the Legacy Concept puts a strong, hexagonal 3-bar grille front and center, flanked by a suggestion of angular headlights with inset halos. The lower front fascia handles more air-intake duty with vertical ducted slits at either side, further suggesting a performance angle.

On the whole, the Legacy Concept’s design language speaks more clearly to us than anything recently shown in production form from the brand, though after seeing the language of the WRX Concept at the New York Auto Show and its final translation into the new production WRX, we expect to see reality intercede in the themes expressed here.

The 2015 Subaru Legacy's engines are carried over almost identically from last year's car. However both flavors of manual transmission are finally bowing out; all models now come with Subaru's Lineartronic CVT. Output from the 2.5-liter boxer 4-cylinder sees a slight bump to 175 horsepower (2 hp more than last year's model) and 174 pound-feet of torque. The 3.6-liter boxer 6-cylinder is unchanged at 256 hp and 247 lb-ft. Fuel economy benefits from the new platform with the 2.5-liter model rated at an estimated 26/36/30 miles per gallon city/highway/combined, a boost of 2/4/3 mpg, respectively, over the previous generation. The 3.6-liter also sees a modest rise to 20/28/23 mpg, 2/3/3 mpg better respectively. Fairly impressive figures for an all-wheel-drive, midsize sedan.

Other changes to the interior include a new design that Subaru says "highlights horizontal themes." A 2-binnacle gauge cluster faces the driver, and features either a 3.5-inch central LCD screen or 5.0-inch display on cars with the EyeSight suite of safety features. Soft-touch materials are used throughout the cabin, and thicker cushioning graces the armrests and center console. A new infotainment system with a 6.2-inch touchscreen is front and center, featuring Subaru Starlink connectivity with Aha and Pandora streaming radio integration, Bluetooth hands-free capability, a standard rearview camera, iPod integration, and USB and auxiliary inputs. The touchscreen display utilizes multi-touch functionality, and like many smartphones and tablets offers swipe and scrolling gestures. Navigation is available on Premium and Limited trim levels, and also offers voice command recognition.

The 2015 Subaru Legacy has been a top performer in occupant protection and safety, and the new 2015 Legacy looks poised to add to Subaru's preeminence for affordable active-safety technology. A new EyeSight driver assistance system has improved camera performance, and active safety technology can include Blind Spot Detection, Lane Change Assist, and Rear Cross Traffic Alert; these systems now include rear radar hardware. The Legacy also features—in addition to the usual array of airbags—new front seat-cushion bags that help hold occupants in place in a frontal collision. And new Steering-Responsive Foglights have been added to the list of options, aiding visibility around dark corners.
